For today, let's remember this expression.

Hey there!

instead of "Hello" or "How are you?" we can use this expression to greet someone.

Similar to this is :

Hi there!
Hey!

However, make sure that you're in a friendly, casual relationship with the other person before using this phrase.
Of course, you are also free to combine several of them into one, such as

Hey, hi there!
Hi! How are you?
Hey there, how are you?
Hello there, hi!

and many others.

FAQ:
  1. I heard someone use this phrase with their boss! Is that OK?
A : As stated before, make sure you're in a friendly, casual relationship with the other person. So if you're quite friendly with your boss that you can have light conversations with him/her, it's perfectly fine to use informal English with them.

  1. Can I use this in a phone call?
A : Yes. Because it's a substitute for the conventional "Hello". Just make sure that the person on the other end of the line recognizes you.

  1. What is the right gesture or body language for this phrase?
A : There's really no right or wrong when it comes to gesture and body language, as it also depends on the culture setting. Generally, a smile and a raise of one hand is most found when saying "Hello", however in certain Asian countries a bow and avoiding eye contact is much appropriate. So observe your surroundings if you're not sure what gesture to use.
